Cricket as a game has its share of drama. The history of this game will relate a lot of interesting stories many of them inspiring to the core. One such story is about the passion of English cricketers and is well known to many cricket followers as “The Legend of The Ashes”. The Australian had visited the British Isles and defeated the mighty Englishmen in a dramatic test match series in the year 1882.
This defeat was taken as a humiliation by many of the passionate followers of English cricket. A report in his dramatic essay describing the events had compared the defeat to the death of English cricket. He said the Australians had killed the English, cremated the body and were carrying the Ashes back home. This article spread a wave of angst among the English cricketers. They visited Australia on a Test tour and won 2 out of the three matches played, incidentally the English had lost the first match and hence had battled with all their might to make sure they don’t return home as losers. The English players regained their pride by defeating Australia on their home ground. On of the Australians burnt a bail (It would have been more appropriate if they had burnt cricket bats), collected the ashes put it a urn which was placed in a velvet drape. This urn was given to the English players who were returning home, thus the Ashes were brought back home.

This urn is placed at “The Oval” a famous English cricket ground. The legend of “The Ashes” repeats itself every time the Australians visit the English Isles to play the English with the ferocity display by their predecessors. This drama definitely adds to the thrill of the series, each team is fighting for its pride.
